KOI KOI

Imagine it’s one of the final nights of boarding school. You decide to stay up late studying for the exam you have the next morning. You’re feeling stressed and unprepared, but when you look at the clock and it’s now 3:21 am; hours past lights-out.

You shut your laptop, take off your glasses, and quietly sneak down to the showers to get ready for bed. When you step into the long, dark hallway, it’s clear everyone is asleep. All you hear is this click click sound repeating with a pause in between, but once you get to the bathroom door, it stops.

While inside, you walk to the furthest shower from the door; the one known for having the warmest water. When you turn it on, you hear this loud whistle, overpowering the quiet one coming from the shower. You quickly turn it off and peek your head out, but it stops and there’s nothing there. Maybe it’s nothing.

When you finish showering, you grab your towel and wrap it around you, but before you can step out, you hear the whistling again, followed by the bathroom door creaking open slowly, then slam closed. The clicking sound is back, but only for a second. Then hear humming.

You peek your eyes through the curtain, just enough to see, but strangely enough, the only glimpse you catch is the toe of a red heel poking around the corner.

That’s when the humming stops. And a voice asks, “Do you have my other shoe?” There’s silence, then, “I thought I lost it, but I think you have it”

As you stare at the shoe, a dark figure begins to take shape.

It laughs with this sinister tone and repeats, “Do you have my other shoe? I thought I lost it, but I know you have it”

Now the shadow is staring at you. You can feel it. That’s when you quickly rush to the wall of the shower, far away from the curtain.

Your eyes are peeled; terrified about what’s on the other side. That’s when something on the floor of the shower catches your eye. A red heel is lying there.

You slowly bend down; reaching for the heel. When you barely touch it, a sinister silence fills the air, before…

“Give. Me. My Shoe.”

This time the voice sounds evil and terrifying. The clicks start again; louder, angrier, and are coming towards you quicker than you can react, especially because you can’t see where it’s coming from. So you ball into the corner and try to hold back your fear.

It stops right outside of the curtain. You hear the heel get picked up and placed on with one last click. “Thank you.” The clicks go off into the distance, then out the bathroom door.

The next morning, you failed the exam. Every click of a heel you heard, reminded you of that night. No one believed you. They laughed, saying there was no one but you on the cameras in the hallway. They didn’t know, they didn’t understand, the urban legend is true.
